Memorial Fund

The Groom family is proud to honor Chris with the Chris Groom Memorial Fund, benefiting needy and underprivileged children throughout the area. You can support this fund through a direct donation or by sponsoring Suzanne in her Richmond Marathon this November. We want to spread Chris’ spirit to help less fortunate children. 100% of your donation will go towards the many children’s organizations we support throughout the year.

The Holiday season is always the busiest time of the year for our family. Following the Richmond Marathon that Suzanne runs each November, she immediately begins to work with area school counselors to provide all new coats, shoes, hats & gloves to kids in need.  More than 100 winter coats and more than 80 pairs of shoes are purchased each year for these children.  Special “Thanks” goes out to Rack Room Shoes at Brier Creek for their generous discounts each year when she comes to buy the shoes, and to Dillard’s at Triangle Towne Center who also offers exceptional service and additional discounts on all the coats she buys.  Both store managers really seem to enjoy helping her with the shopping and truly understand why we do what we do. They also understand that each discount they can offer means more shoes and coats for disadvantaged youth in our area.

A couple of weeks before Christmas, more than 30 friends and family members join Mike & Suzanne for our annual Toys-For-Tots shopping spree at Target. As always, Mike rents a moving truck and our goal is to fill up the truck with toys, bikes, scooters, etc.  The next morning, our family delivers all the gifts to the Bayleaf Fire Department in Raleigh, one of the only Toys-For-Tots drop-off sites large enough to handle our truckload. You might have even seen us on the news during Christmas season as ABC News Channel 11 came out to do a story about our mission (see video above).

In addition, as we have for many years now, we participate in the “Holiday Cheer Program” through Wake County Social Services and many families, where we provide Christmas gifts to all of their children.  All the gifts are wrapped and personally delivered to each family throughout Wake County during the week of Christmas.  A special “Thanks” goes out to those of you who have helped us with this mission.  We also sponsor the Christmas Party at the Raleigh Rescue Mission where every child receives toys.

With this letter, we hope that you have a good understanding of how your sponsorship dollars have been used.  You should feel proud that your generosity every year has helped to provide Christmas joy to needy and underprivileged children in our community.

It still seems like yesterday that we lost Chris.  We do not believe in the theory that “Time Heals All Wounds”.  We believe that time eases some of the pain but the wound left behind in our hearts will never heal. Shortly after Chris’ death, we decided that the worst thing we could do was to curl up in a ball, wallow in our grief and misery and be angry at the world each day.  We had to do something meaningful with our lives that could honor Chris’ memory and enrich the lives of others less fortunate.  Your support of our family and your generous sponsorship donations to the Chris Groom Memorial Fund has been nothing short of amazing.  And to this we say…THANK YOU!

With grateful appreciation,

The Groom Family  (Mike, Suzanne, Chase, Madison, Gabrielle, Austin and Grayson…and of course, Chris)
